David Hawkins

Director
David was awarded a first-class honours MEng degree in Environmental and Earth Resources Engineering at Imperial College in 2002 and gained a MRes degree 2011 from UCL, followed in 2016 by an EngD researching life cycle carbon emissions in the HE sector. He worked previously with Mark Skelly at Max Fordham and joined Skelly & Couch in 2016.
David has led transformative projects across the UK, focusing on cultural, educational, and heritage sites. He is currently directing the Nature + Love project at the Horniman Museum in South London, revitalising spaces to promote learning and wellbeing. His notable contributions include a sustainability-focused convening hub at Rhodes House, Oxford, showcasing innovative engineering within a Grade II*-listed building, and the recently completed refurbishment of the Grade I-listed British Academy. David also led environmental services for Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and St Hilda’s College’s Riverside Pavilion, where natural ventilation strategies prevent overheating. His earlier achievements include the award-winning Cambridge House redevelopment for Birkbeck, University of London, and a boarding house for Tring Park School.
David specialises in sustainable design and energy/carbon masterplanning. Recent work includes strategies for New Gokul Farm Visitor Experience in Watford, Newport Harbour development on the Isle of Wight, the Cowdray Estate in West Sussex and Oxbridge colleges such as Emmanuel, Sidney Sussex and Mansfield.
Within the practice, David leads a team of engineers and oversees net-zero carbon initiatives, focusing on both carbon neutrality and achieving net-zero operational carbon. He is an active CIBSE member.
David is a keen cyclist and runner, completing one or two half marathons annually. He also enjoys playing piano, guitar, and trumpet.
